Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. It can really make a difference in terms of your overall figure and body contour. When you come to our Edina plastic surgery center, we’ll be sure to go over all of your options in great detail so that you can make the best decision possible about your appearance. Right now, we’d like to look at the different incision methods that a surgeon can use to place your breast implants.

Why Different Incision Methods Are Available

The size, shape, and composition aren’t the only options to consider when it comes to Edina breast augmentation surgery. There are multiple incision sites to consider in order to place the breast implants. We should note that the best incision site will vary from patient to patients and will depend on your own aesthetic goals.

The four incision options we’d like to examine right now are as follows:

  • Inframammary incisions
  • Periareolar incisions
  • Transaxillary incisions
  • Transumbilical incisions (TUBA)

Inframammary Incisions – Along the Underside of the Breast

Inframammary incision are incisions which are located along the underside crease where the breast meets the chest. These incisions tend to be very popular since they are generally well hidden and allow surgeons greater control during the implant placement. Both silicone and saline breast implants can be placed using this incision.

Periareolar Incisions – Around the Areola

Periareolar incisions are located around the areolas. These breast enhancement surgery incisions are also fairly common and allow for greater control of the breast implant during placement. As long as the incisions heal properly, scarring around the areola is hard to notice. Both silicone and saline breast implants can be placed using this incision.

Transaxillary Incisions – In the Armpit

Transaxillary incisions are one of two breast augmentation incisions not located on the breast. Instead, the incision is located in the armpit. The breast implant is carefully positioned in the breast pocket through this incision. The transaxillary incision can only be used to place saline breast implants.

Transumbilical Incisions (TUBA) – Inside the Belly Button

Transumbilical incisions (TUBA) are incisions that are made in the belly button. This allows for no visible scarring around the breast area or other parts of the body. Like the transaxillary incision, TUBA incisions can only be used to place saline breast implants.

The Best Option for Your Needs

Obviously we will need to discuss all of your aesthetic goals at length. When you meet with a cosmetic plastic surgeon serving Minneapolis, you will be able to determine what kind of breast implant you would like and what incision would be most effective for the placement of the implant.

It may also be important to consider the need for secondary surgery/revision surgery should you experience any complications after the initial breast enlargement surgery. Inframammary and periareolar incisions can be reused for revision surgery, minimizing any further scarring. By contrast, new incisions will need to be made for revision surgery if a patient has transaxillary or TUBA incisions.
