Rhinoplasty
Nose surgery can help people who don’t like the shape or size of their nose, as well as those who suffer breathing problems.
Also known as a “nose job” or rhinoplasty, the procedure can dramatically change a person’s appearance for the better. Dr. Brian Kobienia has performed rhinoplasty for hundreds of women and men to improve nose shape and function.
If you’re considering nose surgery, you’re not alone. Tens of thousands of rhinoplasties are performed each year in the U.S. Candidates for rhinoplasty often would like to change one or more of the following conditions:
- A bump on the bridge of the nose
- A nasal tip that sags or plunges downward
- A nasal tip that is thick or enlarged
- A nose that appears too large for the face
- A nose that is crooked or off-center
Please contact us online or call 612-930-1111 to schedule a FREE cosmetic consultation to discuss your facial plastic surgery options. Dr. Kobienia in Minneapolis, MN, can give you a refreshed look through facial plastic surgery.
Why Choose Us for Nose Surgery
Dr. Kobienia develops an individualized treatment plan for each of his nose surgery patients. He has decades of experience performing rhinoplasty and knows how to create an attractive, satisfying appearance that delivers on the look you want.
There are two primary techniques Dr. Kobienia uses to perform rhinoplasty: the closed technique and the open technique. Dr. Kobienia strongly favors the open technique, which utilizes an incision made across the columella, the narrow strip separating the nostrils to provide more access to revise the existing structures of the nose.
The closed procedure is performed using incisions hidden within the nose only. While this may sound better in terms of the number of incisions and amount of potential scarring, the closed technique offers much more limited access to the structures of the nose. In addition, the additional incision across the columnella is generally nearly invisible once fully healed, minimizing the main concern of using the open approach.
During surgery, Dr. Kobienia makes the predetermined incisions in order to access the underlying cartilage. Depending on the desired shape, he will remove, add, and/or reshape the cartilage. Once the reshaping has been completed and the nose has been sculpted into its desired form, the skin is re-draped and the incisions are closed using sutures. A splint, bandages, and possibly some soft internal packing may be used to help protect the nose during recovery.
Recovery & Results
For recovery, you will be sent home and will return to the office a few days later to remove dressings and check on your progress. We will provide instructions regarding things you should to to keep your incisions healthy and prevent movement or injury to the nose as it heals.
Most patients are able to return to their normal routines within one to two weeks after their rhinoplasty. The biggest concern for most people is being “presentable” and not feeling self-conscious about the bruising and swelling around the midface that at least at first can be quite noticeable.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
Rhinoplasty is an investment in yourself that can not only give you the appearance you desire but can also help you breathe more freely. When choosing a rhinoplasty procedure, the costs involved include everything from the surgery to the hospital and operating room costs, anesthesia, and presurgical tests. These costs can vary based on the experience of your surgeon, the type of rhinoplasty procedure performed, whether or not it is for a medical need, such as breathing issues, and even your geographical location.
How can I find the best plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty near me?
When looking for a plastic surgeon for your rhinoplasty, you want to find a surgeon that is experienced with the rhinoplasty procedure and performs them on a regular basis. You want to evaluate their before and after photos that closely match your concerns and see the results that they were able to achieve. You also want to find a surgeon that you are comfortable with and that answers your questions and addresses your concerns.
Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
A good candidate for rhinoplasty is healthy with no underlying medical concerns. You want facial growth to be complete and you want to have a positive outlook and realistic goals when it comes to the changes you are hoping to achieve.
Does rhinoplasty hurt?
Your rhinoplasty procedure will take place under local or general anesthesia so you should not feel any pain during your procedure. After your procedure is complete, you can expect to feel some discomfort, as well as some swelling and bruising. This can be managed through pain medication and generally improves within a few days.
How long is rhinoplasty recovery?
Recovery times vary based on individuals and the body’s natural healing ability. It will also depend on the type of rhinoplasty performed. In general, patients are able to return to work and limited daily activities within a week or so, however, physical activity, such as exercise, may be limited for several weeks after your procedure.
When will I see my rhinoplasty results?
The results of your rhinoplasty procedure can be seen after the swelling and bruising subside. You will be able to see improvements to the shape, size, and even function of your nose at this time. However, final results are not visible for six months or more after your procedure when your body completely heals.
What risks are involved with rhinoplasty surgery?
While rhinoplasty is considered a safe cosmetic surgery procedure, every surgery comes with possible risks. With rhinoplasty, potential risks can include bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to the anesthesia, trouble breathing through the nose, and numbness in and around the nose.
How can I prepare for my rhinoplasty procedure?
When you schedule your rhinoplasty, there are a few things you should consider doing to prepare for the procedure and your recovery. These can include:
- Quit smoking – smoking can affect your ability to heal after the procedure
- Stop taking certain medications – your surgeon will go over your medications and let you know which ones to stop before the procedure. OTC aspirin and ibuprofen should also be avoided as they are considered blood thinners and can affect your procedure and recovery.
- Create your place for recovery – After rhinoplasty, you will need to keep your head elevated for the first week. Create a recovery area that allows you to rest upright, such as a recliner or additional pillows to elevate your head. Consider making ready-to-heat meals in advance and have all your post-surgical medications within reach.
