Understanding the Trends in Breast Augmentation Statistics

Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation procedure is designed to not only achieve a fuller bust line, but to make the breasts more symmetrical. This is part of the reason that this procedure remains one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries year over year nationwide.

Dr. Brian Kobienia, a skilled plastic surgeon serving the Minneapolis, MN area, can perform breast augmentation to enhance your physique and sense of self. If you are considering this cosmetic surgery, read on to learn about breast augmentation statistics.

The Number One Cosmetic Surgery in 2017

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) tracks the number of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures performed annually.

In 2017, breast augmentation was the number one cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United States. Out of nearly 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries performed that year, just over 300,000 were breast augmentations. This accounts for about 17 percent of the total cosmetic surgeries performed.

Continued Popularity of Breast Augmentation

ASPS figures show that 3 percent more breast procedures were performed over 2016, when under 300,000 breast augmentations were performed. Compared to 2000, when there were about 212,000 procedures, there has been a 41 percent rise.

Additionally, breast augmentation has been the top cosmetic surgical procedure since 2006. Breaking down the data a little further, silicone implants were used in 87 percent and saline implants in 13 percent of all breast augmentation procedures in 2017.

The Age Breakdown of Breast Augmentation Patients

An interesting piece of data in the ASPS report breaks down breast augmentation patients by age demographic. That information is summarized below in order of the age group most to least likely to undergo a breast augmentation:

  1. There were 111,210 operations performed on women ages 36 to 50, making up 37 percent of breast augmentation patients.
  2. There were 87,623 procedures performed on women ages 51 to 64, accounting for 29 percent of the total breast augmentations performed.
  3. There were 85,690 procedures performed on women aged 20 to 39, representing 29 percent of breast augmentation patients.
  4. There were 8,435 surgeries performed on girls 13 to 19, accounting for three percent of all procedures performed.
  5. There were 7,420 procedures performed on women aged 65 and over, making up about two percent of the total breast augmentations performed.

Increased Spending on Cosmetic Surgery

As cosmetic surgeries and non-surgical cosmetic procedures continues to rise in popularity, it comes as no surprise that Americans are spending more money on these elective procedures. About $16 billion was spent on cosmetic plastic surgery and minimally invasive procedures in 2016.

Multi-procedures and Returning Patients

In addition to spending more on cosmetic work, there is a growing interest in having multiple procedures performed at once. This demographic was up by 4 percent in 2017, compared to the previous year.

According to statistics, 41 percent of patients in 2017 were having multiple therapies at once. Additionally, 45 percent of cosmetic patients in 2017 had cosmetic therapies performed previously.
