The Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery

If you’re embarrassed by flabby upper arms, arm lift surgery may be an option for you. Arm lift surgery can give you slender, more youthful arms than exercising alone is able to achieve. Edina plastic surgeon Brian J. Kobienia offers arm lift surgery as one of your many options in achieving the body of your dreams. Here is an overview of arm lift surgery and what it can do for you.

The Arm Lift Surgical Procedure

Arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper arms through removal of excess skin and fat. Arm lift surgery typically lasts two to four hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Brachioplasty is performed by creating an incision from the underarm, extending down as far as the elbow. This incision is made along the inner arm to minimize the visibility of scarring. From the incision, excess skin is removed and, for some of our patients in Edina, liposuction may be performed to further sculpt the arms. Once completed, the incisions are closed and bandaged.

What to Expect Following Arm Lift Surgery

After arm lift surgery, patients can expect to feel some pain, swelling, and discomfort. You may experience some bruising as well. The initial recovery phase is generally lasts for about 10 to 14 days. Most patients will be fully recovered in four to six weeks, with full results noticeable by six weeks. Strenuous activity must be avoided during recovery in order to avoid complications. If you notice swelling or pain that worsens, this may be an indication of infection or other problems and should be brought to your doctor’s attention immediately.

Candidates for Arm Lift Surgery

Arm lift surgery is not right for everyone. Brachioplasty is not suitable for patients with certain medical conditions. Candidates should be in good general health and able to tolerate surgery. Possible candidates are:

  • Those who are unhappy with their arm’s appearance
  • Those with loss of elasticity in the upper arms
  • Those with excess, hanging skin from the upper arms
  • Those in good health
  • Non-smokers

The Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery

The benefits of arm lift surgery can have a lasting impact on your quality of life. Many patients feel improved self-esteem within a few weeks following surgery. With arm lift surgery, you will be able to wear sleeveless styles with confidence and pride. Here are just a few of the many benefits of arm lift surgery for our patients:

  • Increased self-esteem and confidence
  • Rejuvenated arms
  • Slender looking arms
  • Better muscle definition
  • Able to wear sleeveless styles with confidence
  • Clothing may fit better
