At Kobienia Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian J. Kobienia provides his patients with all the details they need to make confident, informed decisions regarding whether to proceed with a given procedure. He takes time to answer all of their questions and address all of their concerns openly and honestly. Even with a safe, time-tested procedure such as breast reduction surgery, he wants patients to understand that there are side effects of which they should be aware.
Indeed, no surgical procedure is without risks, and no surgical procedure is without side effects, no matter how safe and beneficial it may be. Breast reduction is no exception to this rule. Dr. Kobienia details breast reduction side effects during consultations at his Edina, MN practice, along with other important information about the procedure. Unlike serious complications, the risk of which is present with any surgery but very rare with breast reduction, some side effects are inevitable when a patient undergoes surgery. Dr. Kobienia emphasizes that, while he does whatever he can to limit side effects, patients must follow all post-surgical instructions to the letter to keep side effects to an absolute minimum.
We invite you to read the following information about breast reduction side effects and then contact Kobienia plastic surgery to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Brian J. Kobienia.
What Are the Most Common Side Effects of Breast Reduction Surgery
In general, breast reduction is a safe procedure that has the potential to reduce the physical pain disproportionately large breasts can cause while restoring a woman’s confidence in her appearance. Serious complications such as infections are extremely rare, especially when patients are diligent about following Dr. Kobienia’s post-surgical instructions. Side effects, however, should be expected. These side effects may include:
- Discomfort or pain: Some discomfort is to be expected after breast reduction surgery. This usually takes the form of soreness or achiness, and can generally be controlled with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Kobienia. Pain may reach moderate levels, in which case medication levels may be adjusted according to a scale provided by Dr. Kobienia. Severe pain is rare.
- Swelling, itching, bruising, and tenderness at the incision sites: These side effects are common and tend to subside fairly quickly after surgery. It is important not to scratch the skin, difficult though it may seem to abstain. Compression garments will help to improve blood flow, keep swelling in check, and promote quick healing.
- Numbness at the incision sites: This, too, is common after any surgery. Some loss of sensation at the incisions sites could be permanent, but most – if not all – feeling should return over time.
- Visible scarring: Although Dr. Kobienia uses the most advanced minimally invasive techniques at his disposal, breast reduction is a major surgical procedure that will leave visible scars. These scars will heal over time, becoming fainter and flattening out, but some degree of scarring will always be visible. Patients must be aware of and accepting of this before they are permitted to undergo surgery.
