ASPS 2018 Statistics

Breast Augmentation

The latest statistics are in from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Each year, the ASPS records the top surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States. Once again, breast augmentation and enlargement surgery is the most popular surgical procedure and BOTOX® injections are the most popular non-surgical procedure. These numbers reflect some trends we see here at our Minneapolis, MN cosmetic surgery center.

Dr. Brian J. Kobienia and the Kobienia Plastic Surgery team would like to go over some of these statistics below. We’ll also try to suss out some predictions about where cosmetic treatment is headed based on these statistics.

A Trend Toward Non-Surgical Treatments

According to ASPS numbers, there were 17,721,671 cosmetic procedures total performed in 2018. Of that number, 15,909,931 were non-surgical treatments. That was the vast majority of procedures by far, comprising 89.7 percent of all cosmetic procedures. We should also point out that there was a 2 percent increase in non-surgical procedures over the tally from 2017.

The Most Popular Surgical Procedures

The ASPS found that the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures of 2018 were:

  • Breast Augmentation – 313,735
  • Liposuction – 258,558
  • Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty) – 213,780
  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) – 206,529
  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) – 130,081

Two other popular plastic surgery procedures outside of the top five were the facelift (121,531) and the breast lift (109,638).

Surgical Procedures Gaining in Popularity

There were two surgical procedures that experienced significant gains from 2017 to 2018. These were the buttock augmentation with fat grafting and hair transplantation surgery. There were 24,099 buttock augmentation with fat grafting procedures performed in 2018, a 19 percent increase; 23,658 hair transplantation surgeries were performed in 2018, an 18 percent increase.

The Most Popular Non-Surgical Procedures

The ASPS numbers identified these as the five most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures of 2018:

  • Botulinum Toxin Type A (BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®) – 7,437,378
  • Soft Tissue Fillers – 2,676,970
  • Chemical Peel – 1,384,327
  • Laser Hair Removal – 1,077,490
  • Microdermabrasion – 709,413

Two popular non-surgical procedures outside of the top five were intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy and laser skin resurfacing. There were 675,552 IPL procedures and 594,266 laser skin resurfacing procedures performed in 2018, each experiencing a 1 percent increase from 2017 numbers.

Non-Surgical Procedures Gaining in Popularity

The biggest boost in popularity among non-surgical procedures involved non-invasive fat reduction methods such as Coolsculpting and Liposonix. There were 376,962 of these procedures performed in 2018, a 6 percent increase from 2017 numbers.

The Continued Popularity of Breast Augmentation

The ASPS has listed breast augmentation surgery as the most popular plastic surgery procedure since 2006.

Here are some recent breast augmentation ASPS numbers for some perspective:

  • 2017 – 300,378 breast augmentation procedures performed
  • 2016 – 290,467 breast augmentation procedures performed
  • 2015 – 279,143 breast augmentation procedures performed
  • 2014 – 286,254 breast augmentation procedures performed

What These Trends Say About the Future

We assume based on these numbers that non-surgical procedures will continue to experience increases in popularity, particularly cosmetic injectables. We also assume that breast augmentation will hold steady in popularity while facelift notices some more steady declines given the rising popularity of cosmetic injectables.
