When it comes to helping patients look their best, Dr. Brian Kobienia knows that he has to carefully customize procedures to meet their needs. This focus on patients as individuals is what makes him one of the leading cosmetic plastic surgeons in the Edina area.
Customized care is especially important with breast augmentation and enhancement surgery. With that in mind, let’s consider one of the methods of placing breast implants: the transaxillary breast augmentation technique.
About Transaxillary Breast Augmentation Surgery
The transaxillary breast augmentation incision refers to an incision that is made in the armpit of the patient. This is a type of hidden-scar method for performing breast augmentation surgery. The implant is inserted and then carefully positioned in the breasts in order to improve the size and shape.
A Hidden Incision Means No Visible Scarring
Since the incision for the breast augmentation procedure is concealed in the armpit, patients are able to wear any garments that they would like without fear of visible scarring on the breasts. This goes for blouses and tops, bikinis and bathing suits, and even bras and other undergarments.
The incision in the underarm area may be noticeable at first when you have your arms raised, but it fades with time. Since few people will closely examine your underarms for scars, it’s quite an ideal solution to consider.
Only Saline Breast Implants Can Be Used
Because of the location of the incision, only saline breast implants can be used for the procedure. Silicone breast implants will simply not be a viable option. In addition, there may be some limitations as to the size of the saline breast implants given the location of the incision in the underarm area. This can be discussed with your surgeon during the consultation process.
Might Not Be an Ideal Option for All Patients
There are other reasons why the transaxillary breast augmentation incision may not be ideal for a patient. For instance, a patient’s anatomy and general physique may require a surgeon to have more ability to control and manipulate implants. This means incisions may need to be on the breasts themselves in order for that level of control to be exerted.
Similarly, if a patient has additional aesthetic needs, like they need their breasts lifted or their areola size reduced, this can only be achieved through the use of incisions on the breasts themselves.
Alternatives to Transaxillary Breast Augmentation Surgery
There are three common alternatives to the transaxillary breast augmentation technique. These are as follows:
- Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Surgery – Transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) involves an incision that is hidden in a patient’s belly button. Only saline breast implants can be used in this procedure.
- Inframammary Breast Augmentation Surgery – A common method of performing breast augmentation surgery, the inframammary technique involves an incision along the underside crease of the breast. Silicone or saline breast implants can be used for this procedure.
- Areola Breast Augmentation Surgery – Another common method for performing breast augmentation surgery, the areola technique involves an incision around the areola to place the implants. Both silicone or saline breast implants can be used in this method.
During your consultation at the practice, we will be able to go over each surgical method and which might be most ideal for you and your needs.
