Aging can have many effects on a person. Wrinkles and lines can become more pronounced, and there are certain changes in the body that can signal advanced age as well. Drooping breasts tends to be one of these telltale signs of aging, though it can be addressed through breast lift surgery (mastopexy).
We can performed a breast lift a few different ways at our Edina practice. Let’s consider the lollipop incision method. To understand this surgical option, it may be best to cover the basics of a traditional breast lift first.
About Traditional Breast Lift Surgery
During a traditional breast lift surgery, three incisions are made that form an anchor shape:
- A circular incision around the areola (the darker patch of skin around the nipple)
- A lateral incision along the bottom of the breast where it meets the chest
- A vertical incision along the underside curve of the breast that connects the previous two incisions
Through these incisions, a plastic surgeon is able to remove excess tissue and skin, make any additional adjustment to the underlying structures of the breast, and enhance the perkiness and pertness of the breasts in the process.
The Lollipop Incision Method
A lollipop incision method for breast lift is a variation on the traditional anchor-shape incision method we mentioned above. Rather than three incisions, only two are required. These two incisions are:
- The circular incision around the areola
- The vertical incision along the underside of the breast
Using just these two incisions, a plastic surgeon is able to make the needed adjustments to make the patient’s breasts perkier. The name of this incision method should be obvious.
Ideal Candidates for Lollipop Breast Lift Surgery
The ideal candidates for lollipop breast lift surgery are women with drooping or sagging breasts that do not require a full anchor incision. The sagging is typically noticeable yet not too extreme, or can be addressed through just minor adjustments. They should be in good overall health and not suffer from medical conditions that would make a breast lift a threat to general wellness.
As with all surgeries, it’s important for patients to have realistic expectations about the procedure including awareness of all risks and benefits involved.
Scarring After Breast Lift Surgery
After breast lift surgery, patients will experience some scarring. Such is the reality of undergoing a surgical procedure. That said, the scars will fade over time, and they can be easily concealed with many bras, bathing suits, tops, and undergarments.
Since lollipop breast lift surgery involves fewer incisions, there are fewer scars to worry about. All efforts are made to limit the size of incisions.
Additional Breast Lift Options and Techniques
In addition to the traditional anchor-shaped incision technique and the lollipop incision method, plastic surgeons have other options for breast lift patients. For very minor drooping and sagging of the breasts, all that may be necessary is an incision around the areola. In addition, breast implants may be used during a breast lift to help address issues with drooping and sagging, which opens up additional incision options.
During a consultation at our practice, we can discuss which breast lift option may be right for you and go over all of your concerns about the procedure and what it can achieve.
