Have you been considering plastic surgery? Did you finally decide to take the plunge and schedule your procedure? No matter how emotionally ready you are to undergo your body contouring treatment, it seems that life can become stressful and hectic as your surgery date draws near.
Dr. Brian J. Kobienia offers numerous cosmetic procedures at our Edina, MN practice. Here, we share a few things we recommend including on your shopping list before plastic surgery.
What to Buy from the Grocery Store
Following plastic surgery, you will want to have your fridge and pantry full of nutritious, non-processed, low-sodium foods. Eating lots of healthy, vitamin-packed foods will be essential to a successful recovery.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent for repairing trauma and healing the body. Additionally, you may want to purchase low-sodium crackers and ginger ale to help with any post-surgical nausea.
If possible, we recommend making, packaging, and freezing pre-made meals a few days before your appointment. This will make meals incredibly convenient for you. Because you are making meals yourself, there is no need for the excessive amounts of salt or sodium found in processed foods. (It is important to avoid sodium to reduce post-operative swelling.)
Otherwise, we recommend buying pre-packaged foods that are easy and convenient. This can include things like popsicles, gelatin, pudding, applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese, and nuts. Gatorade is also recommended to help you replenish your electrolytes.
What to Buy from the Drugstore
Being prepared helps you mentally relax. So that you do not have to run errands following your surgery, we recommend that you pick up all necessary prescription medications at your pharmacy ahead of time.
While you are there, you can purchase over-the-counter pain medication, such as Tylenol. It is also a good idea to stock up on Vitamin C tablets to boost your immune system, and arnica montana to help with swelling.
Ask your doctor if you will require a compression garment after your surgery. If so, you may be able to purchase one at the drugstore. It will also be helpful to buy gauze, medical tape, and any other first aid supplies you may need. To care for your incisions, you can purchase an antibacterial ointment, such as Neosporin. Some individuals also use a healing cream to help with the appearance of scars.
Don’t forget to grab all your household essentials as well. For example, be sure you have plenty of antibacterial hand soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
Prepare for Rest, Relaxation, and Entertainment
Depending on the treatment you are receiving, you may need to recover for several weeks. Take advantage of this time! Buy a few new books. Finish binge-watching your favorite Netflix shows. Get some new music or play games to keep your mind occupied. The more time you create for healing, the faster and more successful your recovery will be.
