Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery: What Patients Should Know

Breast Lift Surgery

Serving the greater Edina area, Dr. Brian Kobienia has achieved remarkable results when performing breast enhancement procedures such as breast lift surgery. Breast lift can restore the perkiness and pertnness of sagging breasts, making a woman look much younger and rejuvenated in the process.

We’d like to use this blog post to focus on the recovery process following breast lift and what patients should expect from it.

What to expect immediately following breast lift surgery?

After breast lift surgery has been performed, patients will feel groggy and tired as they are coming out of general anesthetic. Discomfort is also very common. A loved one will help bring the patient back home, and the patient should rest with their body upright, propped by a few pillows.

What to Expect in the First Few Days

During the first few days after breast lift surgery, it’s not uncommon for patients to experience pain, fatigue, swelling, bruising, and other signs of discomfort. These are all normal side effects after a person has undergone surgery. It’s important to get a lot of rest early on and to remain properly hydrated.

Actions to Avoid as You Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery

While you recover from breast lift surgery, it’s a good idea to avoid the following actions, especially early on:

  • Strenuous physical activity
  • Bending at the waist
  • Sexual activity
  • Sleeping on your side, flat on your back, or on your stomach
  • Numbness or tingling of the breasts
  • Smoking/use of tobacco products
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages

Dealing with Pain, Discomfort, and Swelling

Pain after breast lift surgery can be addressed using the pain medication or pain killers recommended by your plastic surgeon. Much of the swelling will be addressed by wearing your surgical bra and surgical dressings in combination with the use of cold compresses, carefully applied.

What to Expect by the End of the First Week

By the end of the first week after surgery, patients will notice a reduction in the amount of pain and discomfort, particularly after the first few days. Patients will have returned to the practice for a follow-up visit by this time in order for their surgeon to note the healing process in its early stages and check that there are no complications.

Patients will generally be able to return to work by the end of two weeks.

What to Expect by the End of the First Month

By the end of the first month, patients will notice significant improvements with regard to their overall sense of wellness. There will be less pain and discomfort, and the bulk of the bruising and swelling will have abated. Additional follow-up visits during this first month will determine which activities a patient can resume and when.

Healing and Scarring Going Forward

In the months ahead, any mild swelling after surgery will slowly fade, and issues with numbness or odd sensations of the breasts/nipples should diminish. Patients will be able to return to many of their old activities and routines after several weeks.

Scarring is a given after any surgery, but incision sites and scars will fade with time. Rest assured that the incisions during breast lift are such that they can be concealed by most undergarments and bathing suits.
