Dr. Brian J. Kobienia offers a full suite of facial treatments to improve contours, diminish the signs of aging, and enhance the overall aesthetics of the face. For patients who wish to improve their appearance, but prefer a more natural approach, facial fat grafting may be the right treatment. This procedure uses fat cells transferred from an area of the patient’s own body into the face to address a wide range of aesthetic issues, including wrinkles, facial contours, scars, and sunken areas. The Facial Fat Grafting Procedure
The facial fat grafting procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and sometimes an oral sedative. The procedure is broken down into three stages. During the first stage, fat is removed from a predetermined area, such as the buttocks, hips, thighs, jowls, or abdomen. Low-powered liposuction is used to gently remove fat cells and prevent damaging them.
Once a suitable amount of fat cells are removed, the cells are isolated by spinning them at a high speed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge is necessary to separate the fat cells from any other fluids and cells that may have been removed during the liposuction process. Next, damaged cells are removed and the healthy, undamaged fat cells are cleaned and further prepared for grafting.
The final step of facial fat grafting involves the transfer of the prepared fat cells into the desired location, or locations, on the face. Injections are strategically placed at different depths and areas to create beautiful contours, smooth wrinkles, or correct other imperfections.
After facial fat grafting, patients may experience some swelling that may last for a few days. Once swelling has subsided, the final results of the procedure should be apparent. Although facial fat grafting can be repeated, patients often see results lasting for several years.
Candidates for Facial Fat Grafting
Candidates for facial fat grafting include both men and women over the age of 18 who wish to rejuvenate their appearance or improve the contours of their face. Those with deep furrows between their brows, lines along the sides of their mouth (marionette lines), or other creases and wrinkles often make suitable candidates for facial fat grafting.
Those who are younger and haven’t experienced any significant signs of aging on their face but wish to enhance their appearance may also be suitable candidates for facial fat grafting. This procedure can be used to add volume to the lips as well as improve the contours of the nose, jawline, and temples. Those who wish to diminish the appearance of acne scars and other depressed scars may also make ideal candidates for facial fat grafting.
