Exercise after Plastic Surgery

Each year, many men and women turn to plastic surgery to address imperfections and achieve their aesthetic goals. Some rely on facial plastic surgery procedures to help reverse the hands of time, while others opt for body contouring treatment to sculpt a more pleasing figure. No matter what type of surgery is performed, the body is going to need time to heal. Although many patients are eager to resume their usual activities, including exercise, they must ease back into a physical routine.

Plastic surgeon Brian J. Kobienia is happy to discuss the optimal exercise timeline after plastic surgery so that his Edina, MN patients know how to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, without compromising the body’s healing process.

Days One and Two of Recovery – Rest is Best

For the first two days after plastic surgery the body is going to be very tired. It is important to allow plenty of time for the body to rest and recharge. However, it is not necessary for a patient to be bedbound. Short, slow walks around the house are okay, as long as the patient listens to the body and does not overdo it.

Weeks One and Two of Recovery – Get Walking

During weeks one and two of recovery, any side effects of surgery are likely to be at their worst. This may lead to continual fatigue. These side effects are also likely to limit physical activity. Although the body will not be ready for strenuous activity, this is a great time to gradually build up to longer and more frequent walks. If the patient feels up to it, he or she can even get out of the house to enjoy some light walks around the neighborhood. A treadmill or stationary bike set on its slowest setting is also an ideal option for this stage of recovery.

Weeks Three and Four of Recovery – Get Active

By three to four weeks after surgery, most patients have returned to work and feel energetic enough to consider a more vigorous exercise routine. It is still best to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting at this time. However, a more moderate and active exercise routine should be acceptable (and even recommended) at this point of recovery. With Dr. Kobienia’s approval, patients can reintroduce light to moderate cardio activities, as well as some light weight lifting.

Six Weeks and Beyond – Work up a Sweat

Each plastic surgery procedure is unique, as is each patient’s recovery. However, in general patients are free to resume all physical activities by the sixth week of recovery. Exercises that may be re-introduced at this time include running, heavy weightlifting, and more strenuous activities, such as cross fit. Patients who were not especially active prior to plastic surgery are also free to try out a new exercise routine, though they should be cautious about building up strength and stamina before pushing the body too far.
