A small or disproportionate chest is a cause of concern for many women. Because breast augmentation enhances the size of the breasts, it has become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide. Dr. Brian J. Kobienia performs countless breast augmentation procedures each year and is able to skillfully provide patients with the surgical results they desire while allowing them to personalize the procedure to their own unique needs and desires. One way in which breast augmentation is personalized is by the incision technique that is used during surgery. While there are several options to explore, the inframammary breast augmentation incision is preferred by many of our Edina patients because of the many benefits it provides.
Placement of the Inframammary Incision
Understandably, many patients are not familiar with the term “inframammary.” The inframammary incision is one that is placed along the inframammary crease, which is located beneath the natural fold of the breast, where the bottom of the breast meets the chest. This incision is typically just 1 to 4 cm in size (depending on implant size) and can be easily hidden, even when wearing a bra or bikini.
Benefits of the Inframammary Incision
The inframammary incision is the most commonly used technique and is popular among Dr. Kobienia’s patients. There are several advantages to using the inframammary breast augmentation incision, which is why it is so widely chosen. Below are some of the benefits of an inframammary incision:
- Incision location: Many patients opt for the inframammary incision because it does not leave a scar on the visible area of the breast. While minimal clothing can easily hide the scar that is left by this incision, many patients report that the scar is not even visible without clothing (unless the breast is lifted to reveal the incision site).
- Implant options: There are some breast augmentation techniques that are not suitable for silicone implants (which are inserted at their full size). The inframammary incision can be adjusted to account for implant size and is, therefore, suitable for both saline and silicone implants.
- Placement options: As with implant type, implant placement can be limited by certain breast augmentation techniques. The inframammary incision allows for all placement options, including above the chest wall, behind the chest muscle and wall, and between the mammary glands and pectoral muscle.
- Enhanced control: Surgical precision is vital to the success of breast augmentation surgery, and the inframammary incision provides Dr. Kobienia with enhanced control over this procedure. This technique allows close proximity to the surgical site and a full view of all aspects of surgery.
Alternate Incision Options
Although the inframammary breast augmentation incision offers patients many benefits, Dr. Kobienia understands that it may not meet the specific needs of each patient. For these patients, there are alternate incisions to consider, such as the periareolar incision and the transaxillary incision. Dr. Kobienia can discuss these techniques in further detail at a personal consultation.
