There are many wonderful benefits that come along with becoming a mother, but, unfortunately, the strain and physical changes to the body are not counted among them. Once the body has healed after pregnancy, most women find that stretched, saggy skin and excess deposits of fat remain a problem. A tummy tuck can tighten loose skin and give the stomach a more toned appearance by eliminating extra fat and tissue. Dr. Brian Kobienia offers tummy tuck after pregnancy to give his Edina patients the chance to restore the body to its pre-pregnancy physique.
A Post-pregnancy Body
Pregnancy causes a number of changes to the body. Not only is weight gain an obvious side effect of pregnancy, but the body actually builds up stores of fat during this time. This excess weight and fat also stretches the skin and abdominal muscles. After pregnancy is over, most women find it nearly impossible to reverse the changes that have taken place during the nine months of pregnancy. Even those who are able to lose all the weight that is gained during pregnancy will likely find themselves dealing with the following imperfections:
- Loose, saggy skin
- Weak or damaged abdominal muscles
- Stretch marks
- Extra fat around the midsection
Women who experience any of the above aesthetic concerns are likely ideal candidates for a tummy tuck with Dr. Kobienia.
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
A tummy tuck is performed with patients under general anesthesia in order to ensure complete comfort throughout the procedure. During surgery, Dr. Kobienia makes an incision that extends from hip-to-hip, low across the midsection, along the bikini line. A second incision will be made around the belly button so the belly button can be placed into a more natural position after the skin has been redraped.
Using the main incision across the midsection, Dr. Kobienia is able to access and repair the stomach muscles. This tightens the muscles in order to create a firmer and more toned stomach. If excess fat deposits are a problem, these can be removed during surgery to produce a more slender appearance. Finally, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is draped across the abdomen to create a smoother, tighter tummy. With the skin redraped, the final step of surgery is the repositioning of the belly button so that it sits in a natural and aesthetically pleasing position on the midsection.
Recovery from tummy tuck surgery takes several weeks, but when swelling and bruising has subsided, patients are often pleasantly surprised by the dramatic results that have been achieved through surgery. A tummy tuck can restore, or even improve, the contours of a woman’s pre-pregnancy body, giving them the slim, attractive waistline that they desire.
